چکیده

The long-term sea level change during 1993 to 2008 was investigated in the Malaysian seas from satellite altimetry data of the TOPEX, JASON-1, ERS-1, ERS-2 and ENVISAT missions. Sea level data retrieval and reduction were carried out using the radar altimeter database system (RADS). In RADS data processing, the 2008 updated environmental and geophysical corrections were applied. Six 1° × 1° areas were chosen for the altimetry data comparison and to find the best ocean tide model for the Malaysian seas, where the altimeter tracks are nearby tide gauge locations. Similarity in the patterns of sea level variations indicates good agreement between tide gauge and altimetry data when using the FES2004 ocean tide model. It also shows that altimetry data is perfectly suited to investigate long-term sea level change in the Malaysian seas. Here, sea level variations for four areas in the Malaysian seas have been investigated using 15 years of altimetry data. The altimeter sea level time series revealed that since 1993, the mean sea level in Malaysian seas has been rising at a geographically-dependent rate varying from 1.4 to 4.1 mm/yr. This kind of information is important for studying environmental issues related to flood investigations and global warming especially for an area that until now have not gotten much attention from the altimeter science community.

Sea Level Change in the Malaysian Seas from Multi-satellite Altimeter Data

The long-term sea level change during 1993 – 2008 is investigated in the Malaysian Seas from satellite altimetry data of the Topex, Jason-1, ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat missions. During the past two decades, satellite altimeter has provided its capability in measuring the global mean of sea level with precision better than 1 mm/year. Sea level data retrieval and reduction were carried out using Ra...

Evaluation of Tidal Error in Altimetry Data in the Asian Marginal Seas

The magnitude and geographical distribution of the error in the Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data (AVISO) altimetry data associated with tidal correction around Asian marginal seas has been revealed. The errors were evaluated by harmonic analysis of the AVISO corrected sea surface heights data (CorSSH). Errors of more than 15 cm of tidal correction were re...

Validation and Applications of Near-real Time Altimetry Data for Operational Oceanography in Coastal and Shelf Seas

Near-real time altimetry products from ENVISAT RA2, Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon tandem mission are validated for the North Sea and Baltic Sea region to assess the feasibility of using the data for operational purposes. The coverage of the satellite data shows that all Jason 1 and Topex/Poseidon observations in the Baltic Sea are currently discarded in the processing of the data. The spatial scal...

Assessment of Altimetric Range and Geophysical Corrections and Mean Sea Surface Models - Impacts on Sea Level Variability around the Indonesian Seas

The focus of this study is the assessment of the main range and geophysical corrections needed to derive accurate sea level time series from satellite altimetry in the Indonesia seas, the ultimate aim being the determination of sea level trend for this region. Due to its island nature, this is an area of large complexity for altimetric studies, a true laboratory for coastal altimetry. For this ...

Multi-Mission Cross-Calibration of Satellite Altimeters: Constructing a Long-Term Data Record for Global and Regional Sea Level Change Studies

Climate studies require long data records extending the lifetime of a single remote sensing satellite mission. Precise satellite altimetry exploring global and regional evolution of the sea level has now completed a two decade data record. A consistent long-term data record has to be constructed from a sequence of different, partly overlapping altimeter systems which have to be carefully cross-...
